Are you bothered by stubborn fullness beneath your chin that does not change regardless of diet and exercise? We at Glo de Vie can help! Amanda Gallagher, board-certified Nurse Practitioner at Glo de Vie Med Spa, is trained to administer the injectable Kybella® from Allergan, the makers of Botox® and Juvederm®.
Kybella is the first and only FDA-approved injectable treatment designed to improve the appearance of moderate to severe fat beneath the chin.
A look of fullness beneath the chin, commonly called “double chin” and clinically called “submental fullness,” can result from genetics, weight gain, aging, or a combination of these factors. Submental fullness can make you appear older or heavier than you truly are.
The active ingredient in Kybella is deoxycholic acid, a molecule that occurs naturally in the body and aids in the breakdown and absorption of dietary fat. The fat that Kybella clears from your treatment area is then processed through your body’s natural metabolic function.
In clinical studies, 79% of people treated with Kybella had improved satisfaction with the appearance of the area beneath their chin 12 weeks after their last treatment. Patients reported improvements in their self-perception and positive emotional impact after their treatment as well.
How many treatments will I need?
Nurse Practitioner Amanda Gallagher will consult with you and help assess how many treatment sessions will help you attain the aesthetic outcome you desire. Up to 6 treatments may be administered, spaced at least 1 month apart.
How should I prepare for each Kybella treatment session?
Prior to your Kybella treatment, please inform Nurse Practitioner Amanda Gallagher of all of your medical conditions, particularly any that pertain to the face, neck or chin areas. Please discontinue NSAIDS such as acetaminophen, naproxen sodium, and ibuprofen; as well as products containing aspirin; for 10 days prior to your treatment. Also, please discontinue St. John’s Wort, Vitamin E, Fish Oil and Garlic supplements for 3 days prior to treatment. Please arrive with neither makeup nor products on your neck and chin areas. If you are prone to bruising or bleeding, you may take Arnica pills (3-5 pills, 3 times per day) starting 3 days prior to your treatment. Men may shave on the day of treatment if desired, but this is not necessary.
How is Kybella administered?
Administering Kybella involves a series of injections per treatment session. Nurse Practitioner Amanda Gallagher will apply topical lidocaine (a numbing treatment) prior to injection, and ice immediately afterward.
Post-treatment: What should I expect after each Kybella treatment session?
Mild pain that is commonly described as a feeling of tenderness will peak approximately 4 hours after your treatment. This tenderness can last 7 days. Swelling, including a hard or heavy feeling, is expected and can last 10 to 14 days. Bruising and numbness are also possible. Continued use of Arnica pills for 3 to 5 days after treatment can be helpful if bruising occurs. Any supplements that you have stopped prior to treatment can be restarted 3 days after your treatment.
